You Can't Keep a Good Man Down!

Well, the Election is over...and...

I feel really bad for John McCain. The poor guy sweated blood and tears for his country and has decades of experience in Foreign Policy and the workings of Washington. He was battered by a slick talking, charasmatic novice who's only experience has been that of running for President.

Well, that's that for another four years. I hope Obama can make the US and it's citizens better off. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Thugs! - Book 2 - Page 1

Something funky is going on with my blog over the last few days. Images are posting waaaaaaay too big on the initial post. I'll have to look into that later...but for now...here's page 1 of book two. I had a lot of fun drawing this page.

It even has it's own Barney the Dinosaur.

Thugs! No. 1

Woohoo!

It's arrived! The first issue of 'Thugs!'

Al posted all the information in a thread on the ComicGeekSpeak forums...

'The comics world may never be the same again! Thugs is finally out of my noggin, off Flint's drawing table and into printed book form, suitable for taking to the can! It's also got a one-pager written by Rich (Bluemeanie) McAuliffe and drawn by Flint! Plus some images from Flint's sketchbook. Plus my ramblings! Why aren't you rushing to find your wallets, people!?!? How Do I Get a Copy?Nobody pays retail anymore. We're selling a limited run of them through www.cheapercomics.com. Ed has set up an automagical 20% discount to anyone from CGS who just wanders in. You have only to create an account and send an email to cheapercomics@cheapercomics.com and drop my name (Al Sparrow) or Thugs, and say I sent you over from CGS to get a discount. This is probably the best deal going to get the book if you don't live in AZ. They also have a pretty nice deal where if you order more than $15 worth of stuff (I think), shipping is free. Cheapercomics kind of works like an "Oh shit, I forgot to order that from DCBS" kind of thing...they have current issues...Discounted! Don't ask me how they're making money, I just know they're selling our book!http://www.cheapercomics.com/products/thugs/vol/1You can also pick it up and pay more than retail by paypalling me $4 (to cover shipping it media mail in a cheap crappy envelope...and if I *like* you I'll throw in a backing board! ). PM if interested. Or you can be a cheap creep and read the sucker online at www.thugsonline.com! CONTEST - WIN THE PROOF COPY!Okay, I promised you a contest. You can win the proof copy...the very first Thugs! comic to see print...with errors and everything...Signed by me and Steve (Flint). Now without the signatures this cherished book is probably worth a nickel...however, our signatures easily takes that up to seven cents, according to Overstreet. That's not all...God forbid I subject you to the torture of reading OUR book...you want something COOL, too! Right? Well I'm also going to throw in a couple EXCELLENT manga for you. Cowa! by Akira Toriyama of Dragonball fame, is a GREAT self-contained story with kid vampires, ghosts, and Toriyama's all-ages sense of humor. This is the book I'm giving out this Halloween to kids. Also you'll get the first volume of Black Lagoon by Rei Tomoe. This one's NOT for your kids, but if you love bullets, booze and broads blowing up battleships with ballistics, you're going to absolutely LOVE this book. It's easily one of the best releases to come out this year. This contest is ONLY open to our CGS forumite family...because we like you guys! How do you win? It's easy...1) Go to www.thugsonline.com2) Take a look at that cover. Looks familiar doesn't it? Kinda like Flint might have swiped it off a more popular book? 3) The first person to post ON THIS FORUM THREAD with the popular cover that Flint is ape-ing here gets the loot. To keep it completely on the up and up...POST A LINK or POST THE IMAGE of the book in question on this thread as well. Fair warning: You might find a similar cover, but there's only one actual correct answer to this contest...Steve has shown me the book. Fair warning Part II: We're going to be doing this with every Thug cover...copying a popular cover, but with Thugs characters...because if Liefeld can do it, so can we! Look for future contests down the way whenever we get around to releasing future issues. Flint and I are really stoked that we got it done. There's truly nothing cooler than seeing the book and holding it in your clammy little meathooks. If nothing else I can look back and say I tossed my hat in the ring. That's worth more to me than anything else... '

Sentry

A commission. A real quick drawing of Marvels Superman rip-off 'The Sentry'.
It's alright. If I was to re-draw it...I'd change 90% of it.

The Incredible McCain - Inks!

The run up to the Election is getting intense. I thought I'd ink this and I'll color it later. I had a lot of fun doing this one.

Mrs Browns Boys - Comic Cover - Colors!

Caretakers Tales - Cover Final!

Here it is!

The final cover color for Caretakers Tales. The color artist is Rob 'Seraphyn' Jackson. He's an amazing artist. You can check out his blog by clicking the link to the right.

Amazing, amazing, amazing.

All that's left is the intro and it's off to the printers.

If your reading this, Thanks again Rob...you're a bloody genius!

The Incredible McCain?

I did this for a cheap laugh. McCain had a rep for lossng his temper and Palin is the new Goddess of American politics...so, I portrayed them as the Hulk and She-Hulk. Right wingers are always calling the left communists..so, why not Obama as 'The Leader' and 'the Gargoyle' as Biden.

It's a good fit.

I might ink this later if I can get the time.

Mrs Browns Boys - Comic Cover - Inks!

Here's the cover so far. Finished the inks...now for the cover.
Brendan saw the blue line sketch and he absolutely loved it. He's making plans to write an annual for me to draw.

Mrs Browns Boys - Comic Cover -Ruff!

Here's an idea I've been toying around with....A Mrs Browns Boys comic book. Obviously the cover design is based on the Simpsons Comics. I always thought Mrs Brown really works well when you put her into bizarre situations...and let her Dublin streetsmarts, humor and wit get her out of the sticky situations she finds herself in.

This concept of her boxing a kangaroo was fun to doodle out. I'm hoping Brandan likes it.

Greenbrook - Page 2

I'm hoping I can keep the pace up while I'm doing my job search!

Greenbrook - Page 1

Just got the final script in for the book and...it's 32 pages. A bit more than I thought...so, I'm going to have to be very economical in my execution of the story. I'll have to look for creative short cuts...whenever possible combine panels or if there's a lot of dialogue...talking head shots etc...

Greenbrook - Page 2 - ruff

Yep...gonna be a bit of a challenge. There's a lot going on in the script.

Greenbrook - Page 1 - ruff

Well, I started the project in earnest. It's going to be a challenge. I have to basically do a page a week to keep up with the deadline...that includes inks and lettering. Here goes...

Gotta finishe coloring it and adding the speech balloons. Hopefully Monday everything will be good to go.

I became a ...

...United States Citizen today.

I took the oath and made the pledge this morning in the Arizona State Fairgrounds stadium with 1700 other 'new' citizens from 170 different countries.

It was a pretty interesting experience. It was a whole big occasion. It was the largest swearing in in history.

There were speeches made by naturalized citizens that came to the US years ago. One that was particulary striking was by a police detective that came over from Germany and became a citizen ten years ago...he choked up as he told the crowd of 'new' citizens and their family members of how much being an American meant to him. He cried his way through his speech and got a thunderous round of applause.

Patriotic songs were played...the whole shebang.

The great thing about the United States is it's optimism. It's contagious.

Well...there you go...no doodles today.

I'm proud to be an American.

Spicy Space Tales - Page 17 - Inks!

A bit rushed. I'll have it cleaner looking, colored and lettered hopefully by Friday.

Inquisitor Vex - Page 2

Oldie but Goodie.

Another of the re-vamped Vex pages from 1997. Damn! That's so far back.

Touchdown!

I thought I'd share this rough done for that Casino game idea. No need to go all out on it...it appears very small in the concept artwork. To see the finished concept work...click on the 'Game Design' tagline.

Busy...Busy...Busy...

Well, I've been keeping really busy! So busy with the puppies and other stuff...(Citizenship and Job Hunting!)...here's a list of comic book work that I have coming out soon.

1. The End!

A two page written, pencilled and inked segment for the CGS SupaShow comic book.

Link: http://www.indyplanet.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1203&osCsid=0a016407e170484d6ac4e2e950a6a27c

2. Short Stack #2: Slumber Party!

A two page pencilled and inked story written by Shawn Gabborin of Angry Gnome Comics.

Link: http://www.angrygnomecomics.com/Short_Stack2/preview/SS2_Cover.html

3. Mercury and The Murd.

Three covers for the PKDMedia series! You can see two of them if you click the link. Can't remember what the third cover is being used for. It might be used for a character guide book.

Link: http://www.indyplanet.com/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?osCsid=b74c4a395ad7b8ef4795d5b906b81402&keywords=Mercury&osCsid=b74c4a395ad7b8ef4795d5b906b81402

4. Thugs!

Al Sparrow's and my creator owned project. lots of fun. Currently being printed as I type and will be available in September.

Link: http://www.thugsonline.com

5. Caretakers Uncannily Nasty Tales.

The artwork for this is completed and the cover is currently being colored by Rob Jackson. The guy's a genius. I hope to have this to the printers soon.)

6. Marvel Masterpieces.

I did 50 sketchcards for Upper Decks Marvel Masterpiece series. Can't post them until I get the go ahead...but as soon as I do...they'll be on here.

7. An Untitled Sci-Fi Anthology.

Haven't decided on a name for this yet...but it will be a Black and White anthology featuring the 'Deb Bonair' strip written by myself with Pencils by Rory Hensley and also George O'Shea's 'Malego' story.

I hope to have this done by the end of the year. I just need a cover for it and a name.

8. GreenBrook.

A secret project written by Shawn Pryor and pencilled, inked by me. This looks like a lot of fun.

9. Flint Lockjaw Interprets BlueMeanies Chicken Scratchings!

Yeah. It's a long title. I said to Rich that I'd redraw his insane doodles for the heck of it...he thought I was joking...But I ain't! This is a ongoing fun project for me and I'll probably start it after the Greenbrook project ends.

The Ventriloquist - Peyton Riley

Another commission. This time it's The Ventriloquist - Version 2. Peyton Riley replaced the first Ventriloquist, Arnold Wesker. Personally...I think it's a pretty decent upgrade, although I do prefer the original Ventriloquist created by John Wagner and Alan Grant. But I understand the reason. She is welcome addition to Batmans villainous Femme Fatales.

Productivity shot...

...to hell!

Myself and my wife got ourselves two Jack Russell Terrorists. The one on the left is Princess and the one on the right is Rooney!

Did I say terrorists? Yep...I did.
These two little cuddly lumps are a helluva handful. I don't expect to get much updating to the blog done as often as I have been. Little suckers eat a lot of my time.

But...ya gotta love 'em.
